Ex- FBI Director James Comey Submits Denial Plea to Allegations of Falsehoods Lawmakers
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to US legislators and hindering a congressional proceeding.
The former director's attorney filed the answer on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the case dismissed for multiple causes including that his defendant, a critic of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
James Comey was indicted just days after Trump urged his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.
Court Developments
At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to file several petitions to throw out the case before a trial, arguing the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to handle the legal matter.
Mr Comey's legal matter was initially managed by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his probe into an additional rival - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.
Courtroom Atmosphere
Mr Comey came across in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the legal venue on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration recently fired.
After listening to the judge recite his rights and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he understood the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.
Previous Events
The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, the director was overseeing an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the election effort.
Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just shortly prior to the national vote that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, leading to disapproval from the Republican party as well.
Present Charges
Prosecutors assert the former director lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he deceived the Senate by saying he had not approved an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to journalistic entities data about the FBI investigations.
Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and impede" the panel by making false statements to it.
Public Statements
Via social media James Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".
"We have known for considerable time that there are costs to challenging the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
The accusations against Mr Comey came after the former president posted on digital channels insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, charge James Comey and additional individuals.
